On 10th of December Little Wishes Hire was put to the ultimate test, to deliver during the “big snow”.
We have to admit, in hindsight we took a big risk, the risk of being stranded on the country roads, or worst still being involved in an accident. However I knew if we didn’t try I’d feel so terrible that the bride and grooms day wouldn’t be as complete without our items.
So at 7am I headed to Fawsley Hall in the van, the snow was heavy and the roads where starting to get slippy. I had to chose a different route so if I did get stuck I wouldn’t be alone on the road. There were a few moments the van did struggle to get up the hills no more so than in Weedon. A lorry had gotten stuck and so traffic was slowing to a standstill, this had to be when I first thought “I’m not going to make it”.
It took quite a while to get the van going and a lot of wheel spins but we did it.
Finally after an hour and a half I reached the lane leading to Fawsley Hall. It’s about a mile long and up and down hills by a fields and hedges. I could see someone was already stuck and as soon as I pulled in I realised I couldn’t get the van along the road. I decided to park up.
After a while a 4x4 arrived and the couple kindly took me and another member of staff to the venue leaving the van with hire items at the bottom of the hill.
I couldn’t fault Fawsley Hall staff who quickly got me a coffee and offered me breakfast, which by the way was delicious if anyone is thinking of staying there!
We weren’t sure how to get the hire items to the venue but we knew we would try our best. I spoke to the bride a few times and soon her make up lady asked a friend to come in his 4x4 and help out and take me back and forth for the items while picking up guests on the way! I have to say this person was a bit of a hero that day, he never complained and got on with it, helping out at a wedding he wasn’t even part of. It took 4 trips down the lane to retrieve the items including having a best man sitting on the boot door to hitch a lift so he wasn’t late for the wedding on one of the journeys! We even picked up the father of the bride, a bridesmaid and her son, brother of the bride and a dog!
I got all items into the venue and the staff in the wedding reception area offered to help me set up and one in particular, Mags, helped with the cart which was put together at top speed just in time for the bride and groom to come out of their ceremony to see it!
I then walked the mile back to the van with a Mags who was also stranded and when we got to the van I gave her a lift back to her home.
This day was a test of team work and good will. I was snowed in at the venue for 6 and a half hours and I saw so many friendly and helpful people. People digging cars out of ditches, pushing cars up hills, giving out free drinks, offering help, clearing pathways and finding out information for guests on which route to take home and advising when would be safest to leave.
I’m so glad I took the risk and helped make Katie and Jamie’s day complete!
I definitely enjoyed a glass of well earned Vino when I got home!
Thank you to everyone involved that day you were fantastic!
Have a fabulous Christmas and New Year!
